Roulette is one of the oldest and most popular casino games in existence. The aim of roulette is simple: correctly predict the number or colour that the ball will land on.
Play roulette online
There are two types of roulette wheels: the European wheel and the American wheel. In European Roulette there are 37 numbers separated into colours: 0 is green, 18 are red, and the remaining 18 are black. There is a 1/37 chance of the ball landing on any particular square with the payout being 35 to 1 plus your original stake if you win. The American wheel has an additional zero which significantly increases the house advantage; therefore it is advisable to stick to European roulette.
The Buy In
In order to play roulette, you must first ‘buy in’ by purchasing your chips. For each table there will be a minimum and maximum bet. You should note that inside and outside bets cannot be combined to make the minimum table bet (e.g., if the minimum bet is $10, you have to bet this amount on both the inside and the outside).
Inside Bets
In roulette, inside bets are relatively specific bets which carry greater risk than outside bets and consequently present greater potential returns. Listed below is a list of common inside bets:
• Straight Up: a bet on any single number (payout = 35 to 1).
• Split Bet: a bet split between any two numbers (payout = 17 to 1).
• Corner Bet: a bet placed on any four numbers (payout = 8 to 1).
• Street Bet: A bet on a row of three numbers (payout = 11 to 1).
• Line Bet: A bet on six numbers over two rows (payout = 5 to 1).
Outside Bets
Outside bets cover a greater number of options, thus providing you with better odds but at lower returns. You should note that the zero is never covered by outside bets.
• Column Bet: a bet covering 12 numbers (payout = 2 to 1).
• Dozen Bet: a bet covering a set of 12 numbers grouped as low (1-12), mid (13-24) and high (25-36) (payout = 2 to 1).
• Red/Black and Even/Odd: bets on either red or black and even or odd (payouts = 1 to 1).
• Low/High Bet: a bet on half the numbers, either 1-18 or 19-36 (payout = 1 to 1).
